Antimicrobial resistance AMR - The silent pandemic

When antibiotics don't work, the doctor is blamed for negligence. But whose negligence it really is???------ While the world watches for the next viral outbreak, a quieter crisis is already unfolding — one that could make routine infections fatal once again. 1.27M Deaths directly caused by AMR in 2019 (WHO). 10M Projected annual deaths by 2050 if unchecked. 100T USD economic damage projected by 2050. ------What is Antimicrobial Resistance? Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve mechanisms to defeat the drugs designed to kill them. When infections no longer respond to treatment, diseases become harder to treat — increasing the risk of spread, severe illness, and death. This is not a distant threat. It is happening now, in hospitals, farms, and communities worldwide. "We are running out of antibiotics. Without urgent action, we are heading towards a post-antibiotic era in which common infections could once again kill." — WHO ------Why is this happening? When you ask pharmacist to give medicine for some issue, the pharmacist hands over 2 tablets of antibiotics or pain killers and say to use one in the morning and one in the evening. When you think you are saving by skipping a doctor consultation, but it is not what it looks really like. Taking 1 or 2 tablets of antibiotics multiple times leads to antimicrobial resistance in the future. Then you end up paying huge amount for the hospital as the bacteria no longer fear our best medicines. Every time we misuse or overuse antibiotics, we speed up the evolution of resistant "superbugs." Key superbugs to know_ MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) — resists most common antibiotics, spreads in hospitals._ Drug-Resistant TB (Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis) now untreatable by the two most powerful TB drugs._ CRE (Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae) — known as "nightmare bacteria," fatal in up to 50% of cases._ Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea — once easily treated STI now developing resistance to last-resort antibiotics globally. ------What can you do? 1. Use antibiotics only as prescribed: -Never self-medicate. -Complete the full course even when feeling better. 2. Stay up to date on vaccines: -Preventing infections reduces the need for antibiotics in the first place. 3. Practice good hygiene: -Regular handwashing prevents infections from spreading in the first place. 4. Spread awareness: -Talk to your community. -Demand antibiotic stewardship from healthcare providers. -------The clock is ticking. AMR has the potential to undo a century of medical progress. The next pandemic may not come from a virus — it may already be here, invisible.
